The Qunut of the Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha Prayer

English translation. The Indonesian original is the authoritative text. Read the Indonesian original

The Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha prayers are two rak’ahs, and what sets them apart from the daily prayers is a set of additional takbirs, each followed by a qunut. The supplication below is the one recommended for each of those qunuts — in both rak’ahs, and on both feast days.

Mafatih al-Jinan gives the order: in the first rak’ah recite al-Fatihah and Surah al-A’la, then say the takbir five times, making a qunut after each; then the sixth takbir, the bowing and the prostrations. In the second rak’ah recite al-Fatihah and Surah ash-Shams, then say the takbir four times, making a qunut after each; then the fifth takbir, the bowing, and the prayer is completed. After the salam, Tasbih az-Zahra a.s. is recited.

It should be noted that the number of takbirs and qunuts differs between the maraji’. What is given above is the order as it stands in Mafatih al-Jinan; the reader should follow the manual of their own marja’.

The qunut itself is not tied to any one wording — any supplication suffices. The one below is the recommended one, and its content matches that standing: it asks for not a single worldly need. What it asks for is a place. The reciter asks to be admitted into every good into which Allah admitted Muhammad SAAW and his family, and to be taken out of every evil out of which they were taken. The request is not about what one hopes to obtain, but about whom one hopes to be standing with.

Note the opening too. This supplication asks by the right of this day — the feast day itself is made the means, because Allah made that day not only a celebration for the Muslims but a treasure and an honour for the Messenger of Allah SAAW.

Calling upon the Lord of grandeur

Allâhumma ahlal kibriyâ’i wal ‘azhamah
wa ahlal jûdi wal jabarût
wa ahlal ‘afwi war rahmah
wa ahlat taqwâ wal maghfirah

O Allah, Lord of grandeur and greatness
Lord of bounty and might
Lord of pardon and mercy
Lord of piety and forgiveness

Asking by the right of the feast day

as’aluka bihaqqi hâdzal yawmil ladzî ja‘altahu lil muslimîna ‘îdâ
wa li muhammadin shallallâhu ‘alayhi wa âlihi
dzukhran wa syarafan wa mazîdâ

I ask You by the right of this day, which You have made a feast for the Muslims
and which You have made for Muhammad — may Allah bless him and his family —
a treasure, an honour and an increase

Blessings upon Muhammad and his family

an tushalliya ‘alâ muhammadin wa âli muhammad

that You send blessings upon Muhammad and the family of Muhammad

Admitted into good, taken out of evil

wa an tudkhilanî fî kulli khayrin adkhalta fîhi muhammadan wa âla muhammad
wa an tukhrijanî min kulli sû’in akhrajta minhu muhammadan wa âla muhammad
shalawâtuka ‘alayhi wa ‘alayhim

and that You admit me into every good into which You have admitted Muhammad and the family of Muhammad
and take me out of every evil out of which You have taken Muhammad and the family of Muhammad
may Your blessings be upon him and upon them

Asking with the asking of the righteous

Allâhumma innî as’aluka khayra mâ sa’alaka minhu ‘ibâdukash shâlihûn
wa a‘ûdzu bika fîhi mimmâ sta‘âdza minhu ‘ibâdukash shâlihûn

O Allah, I ask You for the best of what Your righteous servants have asked You for
and I seek refuge in You from that from which Your righteous servants have sought refuge in You

(1) The Arabic on this page is taken from Mafatih al-Jinan as published by Shabakat as-Siraj (https://alseraj.net/مفاتيح_الجنان/صلاة-عيد-الفطر/), copied as it stands there, including its vocalisation. The order of the Eid prayer given in the introduction above comes from the same page.
(2) The document this page was prepared from carries a slightly different recension: it adds wa karâmatan to the sequence dzukhran wa syarafan, and its closing reads ‘ibâdukal mukhlishûn (Your sincere servants) rather than ash shâlihûn. Differences of this kind are common between manuscripts of a supplication. The Mafatih al-Jinan text is used here because the Arabic in that document could not be copied out intact, and so was not used as the source of the Arabic.
(3) The translation was prepared from that document, with a correction where one was needed: ja‘altahu lil muslimîna ‘îdâ means that You made the day a feast for the Muslims, not a day that the Muslims made.
(4) The transliteration was prepared from the Arabic above, following the same conventions as the Doa Al Ahd page in this archive.
(5) The choice of recension on this page still available for verification from someone qualified.
